Diversity is important in therapy as it gives community access to services with someone familiar with different traditions, stories and beliefs. While counselling can help with many issues such as anxiety, depression and loss, representation matters as it can lift the burden of having to educate about one’s culture or racial experiences to a counsellor from a different background.
BIPOC youth experience both direct and indirect challenges to their mental health and well-being which can add to existing social and cultural harms from race and ethnicity.
Deciding to seek out therapy is an important step and having a therapist who reflects that identity can be invaluable in helping our youth feel understood.
At Thrive, we work to provide a safe space for all youth to feel heard, seen and understood in our supportive work together.
