MASTER’S CLINICAL INTERN

high school TEEN & young adult COUNSELLING

Hi, my name is Ian Magega, and I am excited to be part of the Thrive Teens team as a Master’s Intern. I have a Bachelor of Education degree and have 9 years experience as a teacher and counsellor working with youth, teens and young adults. For the past few years, I have been working as a high school counsellor while completing my Master of Counselling at Athabasca University.

I have a passion for working with youth and teens. I am always deeply inspired by the energy or resilience that teens bring to each interaction. Adolescence is a time of immense growth and change, and I feel privileged to guide and support young people through these pivotal moments. Whether they are navigating challenges related to school, relationships, self-esteem, or other mental health concerns, I find it profoundly impactful to help them discover their strengths and potential.

I work with teens, and young adults on concerns including anxiety, depression, grief, friendships and relationships, boundaries, family issues, school challenges, transitions from school to post secondary/work, and career exploration. I like to provide a client-centered approach as a counsellor, utilizing therapy techniques such as Solution Focused Therapy (SFT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), and Play Therapy.

Outside of the counselling office, I continue to work as a high school counsellor and teacher, while raising my two young children with my wife. I also maintain my own balance by staying active with my favorite hobbies. This includes playing hockey, snowboarding, mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, and enjoying a round of golf.

I look forward to meeting you and walking alongside you on your journey.

Ian
